Festival de Paucartambo
One of the most unique festivals in the Americas, it brings together the Andean community to retell a story of the Virgin del Carmen and her unique place among the indigenous communities. She was brought to the Cusco region, then stolen by natives from the Amazon, but recaptured; this town during 3 days in July reenacts those historic events to pay tribute to their patron saint. At this point there are many more foreigners, touring Peruvians and drunk adolescents from the cities who come to partake in the all-day, all-night dancing, drinking and eating. But the passion, dedication and reverence of the participants is unshakeable. Devotion through and through.
